There are several reasons why people hesitate to start their own business. We look at some of the major ones in the following paragraphs. A look at these could probably help you look at your own thinking, and even make you start a small business of your own, along right lines.

Fear of Failure

You might not say explicitly that you are afraid to start a small business because it will fail. However, deep inside, that might be the reason holding you back. You are not confident of your abilities. You have also heard of the numerous horror stories of small business failure. All these might have led you to believe that some kind of special entrepreneurial personality is needed to succeed in a business.

Actually, an "entrepreneurial personality" consists of self confidence, common sense and certain work habits like planning & organizing, and focused hard work. Read the article Entrepreneurship to understand what it consists of.

Aversion to Risk Taking

You might have a good job now. You (and your family) don't want to risk the steady income it brings by jumping into a risky small business. This is indeed a valid reason. All business involves risks. And it might not be a good choice if you have a good job that yields a good income.

However, all jobs might not be that good. Both low and high paying jobs can involve considerable stress owing to the demands they put on you. Working hours are usually inflexible; you might have to put up with unpleasant bosses; considerable travel might be involved; and so on. A business of your own can provide you some relief, though it too would involve hard work.

Actually, jobs are also becoming risky. Huge changes are taking place in world economy, and jobs are not very secure. It might be a good idea to prepare for a day with no job, by making a start with a small business in your spare time.

Lack of a Clear Business Idea

Even if you are willing to put in the hard work required, and to take the risk, you might be held back because you don't know what business to start. Whichever busines you look at, you find that there is heavy competition. And you have commonsense enough to understand that competing against established businesses is not always a good idea.

The solution to this problem is to go about searching for business ideas in a systematic manner. There are opportunities like becoming a franchisee, buying an existing business, commercializing an invention and so on. The only thing is that you should understand the issues involved and organize to handle these issues.

You can learn more about searching for business ideas in the article What Business?

Lack of Funds

If you have a clear business idea, and have taken the pains to develop it into a business plan, you might find some way to raise the necessary finance. It is when you do not have a clear idea and a detailed plan that fund-raising often becomes a problem. Go through the article on Small Business Funding.
